In 1598 he reviewed the forces of Dorset and took the result to the Privy Council in Greenwich.
Worked with the Italian military engineer Frederico Genibelli on the refortification of Plymouth and the Island of St ?Nicholas in 1596 and 1604He and his brother Thomas and his cousin Edmond and other justices od Dorset wrote to the Privy Council in 1603 in relry to its levy of 600 poiunds on the country which was to be used towards the furnishing of a thousand tons of shipping to defend the English merchants against the Dunkirkers.
