Samuel’s parents, Daniel Harper and Mary KInowles were from Belfast County Antrim, Ireland. They had a daughter Helen born in Belfast in 1846 and a son Hugh born in 1847 also in Belfast. These were the toughest two years of the porato famine in Ireland, during which about 1,000,000 people died. During the period from 1845 to 1852 about 2,000,000 people left Ireland, mostly to North America. They must have emigrated to New York along with the flood of famine servivors. Many died on the way to North America. However Daniel and Mary Harper survied and their son Samuel Knowles Harper was bor on 11 February 1851 (his death record says 11 February 1850).
