Notes for Anthony Uvedale
Inherited the manor of Rothercombe and lands and rents in East Meon and Rothercombe for 126 pounds from his father. Was still in the family hands in 1612 when it was passed to his daughter Ellen and her husband Richard Brunning.
Anthony was a known recusant who was heavily fined by the crown. In 1608 an inquisition was ordered into the goods, chattels, lands and tenements of Richard Brunning and Ursula Uvedale, since various sums of money were due to the crown on account of their recusancy.
Was the farmer, in other words collected the rents or benefits, of Hambeldon Manor from at least 1566 to 1568 from extant records of the manor.116
Anthony was living in Petilworth Manor in about 1580, as at that time he had a painting completed in the manor of the parable of Lazarus and the rich man, which is still extant.
An investigation by the bishop of Winchester sent to Cecil in 1599 said “the manor of Woodcote in Hampshire was given to the ancestors of one Anthony Uvedale, a recusant lately dead, for the safe keeping of the gaol”.
