-Samuel Smith was born in 1629 at Ipswich, Suffolk, England. He married Elizabeth Van Vechten Chileab in Suffolk in about 1624. In 1634 he emigrated with his wife and four eldest children, from Ipswich to Boston on board the ship “ “Elizabeth”. They were Puritans. They settled at Watertown. In 1636/37 he was one of the founders of Wethersfield, Connecticut. He was an “Ancient Serjeant” at Wethersfield before 1658, and in command of the militia from 1663 to 1675. He was the Deputy to the General Court of Massachusetts Bay from 1661 to 1673. Commissioner to the Mohawks in 1667. In 1659 he became one of the founders of Hadley, Massachusetts. 
 
Their son Lieutenant Joseph Smith married Lydia Huit born about 1635 in Wroxall, Warwickshire, England and daughter of Reverend Ephraim Huit and Isabel Overton.  in the next generation their daughter Sarah Smith married John Spencer, a son of Obadiah Spencer and Mary Desborough.
