William, Deliverance and five of their children were killed in a raid on 27 July 1694 by Abenaki Indians. Lydia, John and Bettywere taken captive, Betty died on the way to Montreal. Lydia converted to Catho0licism and became a nun. She is considered thew first North American-born Catholic nun. She remained in a convent until her death. John was adopted into the Abenaki clan where he remained for 5 years. John relucatantly returned home.
