Notes for John Bowne
-John Bowne was born in Mar 1627 at Matlock, Derbyshire, England he migrated to Boston then to Flushing Long, Island, New York in 1651.  He married Hannah Feake in Flushing in 1656. They were Quakers. They were tied up in controversy with Governor Stuyvesant over the freedom of Conscience of the Quakers. John Bowne was jailed, banished from the colony and Ireland. He made his way to Holland where he made his case before the Dutch West India Company. He prevailed the burghers and they advised Governor Stuyvesant that “the consciences of men at least ought to remain free and unshackled”.  
 
Their daughter Elizabeth Bowne married John Prior, son of Mathew Prior and Mary Bryer. Their son Mathew Prior married Hannah Cock, daughter of John Cock and Dorothy Harcourt.
