-Robert Coles was born in England in 1598. He married Mary in about 1630, the same year they emigrated to in the Winthrop Fleet in 1630. He was made a “freeman” in 1631. He was charged on several occasions with being intoxicated. Probably as a result he was forced out of the colony and He was one of the original proprietors of Providence. He was also a Pawtuxet settler and one of the signers of the Providences agreement for a government in 1641. He reformed in earnest and was one of the founders of the First Baptist Church with Roger Williams. relocated to Rhode Island in 1637. His first wife died in around 1636 and he married Mary Hawxhurst in about 1637.
 
His daughter Ann married Henry Townsend Senior. In the next generation Henry Townsend Junior married Deborah Underhill.
