A monument In the Kirkinriola Graveyard at Ballymenas County Antrim, Northern Ireland and erected by his son William James Knowles states: “In memory of John Knowles, a Trooper in Cromwell’s Army who got a grant of Land, in this Country for his Services, Which he lost at the Restoration. Also his son PATRICK KNOWLES, of Fenagh, who died at the Age of 106, And CATHERINE KNOWLES, Wife of the Said Patrick. Also in Memory of James Knowles, of Fenagh, Great Grandson of the above named Patrick and CATHERINE Knlowles, Who died of a Kick from his Horse, 13th June 1859 in his 65th year. ROBERT KNOWLES of Ballymena, Brother of JAMES, Who died 12th August 1862, Aged 60 years. John Knowles, Draper, Also a brother who died 14th March 1884, aged 77 years. JANE ROSS, Sister of the Above, Who died 13th March 1885, Aged 75 Years.

William James Knowles was in the perfect position to prepare this inscription being a Land Agent in this area of some standing, (therefore having good access to historical land records) and also being a well known Archaeologist.
