Notes for Mathew Udell - Direct Ancestor
Mathew joined the 19th Regiment of Foot (The Green Howards) in about 1763, they headed to Gibraltor until returning in 1771. He stayed with the regiment until about 1777.
Charles Howard received command of the Green Howards in 1738, Charles was the grandson of Elizabeth Udall, Countess of Carlisle, from Wickham, Hampshire.
Mathew joined the 26th Regiment of Foot (Cameronians) in early 1780 in Staffordshire.
Mathew is on a muster roll, dated 22 February 1783, at Tynemouth Barracks.
Mathew, his wife, daughter and son John came to Canada in 1787. There they were stationed in Quebec until 1790 when they moved to the Niagara region in Upper Canada. In 1792 the regiment returned to Quebec, the son John stayed in Upper Canada.
Mathew is on a muster roll, dated July 1795, at Quebec City.
The regiment boarded the “Asia” in September 1800 for Halifax on their way back to Europe.
Mathew Udell was discharged in Halifax on the 12th of December 1800 as being “unfit for service due to age and infirmity”.
Mathew Udell was given permission to stay at the Invalid Establishment at Fort William Henry at Sorel on the 13th February 1813. I do not know if he went there.
Mathew Udell’s ancestors had spelt their name Udall, the first spelling of the name as Udell, is Mathew’s petition for land, dated Montreal 10th of January 1802.
