In the 1851 agricultural census he is shown as farming on concession 9 lot 33, with 35 acres in crops and 15 acres in woods.
In the 1861 census for Canada West he is listed as 43; with his second wife Margaret age 26; (listed them getting married in 1853); along with their children George 20; and Catherine 17, John 15; and siblings by his step mother Wellington 6; Washington 4; and Agnes 1. Their religion is Baptist.
He is recorded as moving to Speaker Township, Sanilac, Michigan in 1866. In the 1870 census John Eli is not listed with his fathers family in Michigan. Also Jemima 8; Eunice 5; Ulyses 2 and Nancy 1 are added as more children.
