Hugh lived in Walhalla, Pembina County, North Dakota until a year after his first wife Ida Lawson Gibson died in 1918. She is buried in Walhalla, along with their child that died there. Hugh crossed the border from North Dakota to Manitoba in June 1919 where he then lived in Winnipeg.
