Joseph was born in Dutchess County, New York in 1779 and at the age of 11 he and his family moved west to Wayne, Stueben County New York. In 1798, at the age of 19, he moved first to York in Upper Canada and in around 1802/3 to concession 9 in Pickering (Claremont).
On 6 December 1802 “a yeoman of Scarborough township”, made land petition. He had been in Canada for 4 years, had a wife and three children, and owned 8 head of cattle and farming utensils. He was recommended for 200 acress.
During the war of 1812/13 he served with Captain Samuel Ridout’s Company from 25 November 1812 to 8 January 1813. He was absent without leave from 17 January to 24 January 1813. From 25 January to 6 March 1813 he again served with Ridout’s Company. From 14 April to 24 April 1813 he served in Captain Ridout’s Company. From 25 September to 3 October 1813 he served in under Lieutenant Mathews. From 12 November to 16 November he was repairing roads between York and the township of Darlington under Lieutenant Colonel Baldwin of the 1st Durham Militia. From 25 January to 3 February 1814 he was employed in public service at York under Ensign Thomson. From 11 July to 24 July 1814 he served in Captain Cameron’s Company.
On 16 March 1820, Joseph Wixson, a yeoman of Pickering, made land petition. He had been in Canada for ovee 21 years and had settled on Lot 18, Concession 9 and had purchased Lot 17, Concesssion 9. He wished to lease Lot 15, Conncession 9. Samuel Rideout certified that Joseph had served in his company during ther late war.
