Notes for Mathew Udell - Direct Ancestor (Family North American Pioneer)
-Mathew Udell was born in March 1743 in Ellastone, Staffordshire, England. At the age of 20 he joined the “Green Howards”, the19th Regiment of Foot.  In about 1763 they headed for Gibraltar, only returning in 1771. Mathew remained with the Green Howards until about 1777.  Charles Howard received command of the Green Howards in 1738, Charles was the grandson of Elizabeth Udall, Countess of Carlisle, from Wickham, Hampshire, a distant cousin. Mathew joined the Cameronian Regiment, 26th Regiment of Foot, in early 1780 as they passed through Staffordshire. Mathew is on a muster roll, dated 22 February 1783 at Tynemouth Barracks. Mathew, his wife, a son John and a daughter came to Canada in 1787 with the regiment. They were stationed in Quebec until they moved to the Niagara Region of Upper Canada in 1790. In 1792 they returned to Quebec, the son John stayed in Upper Canada, after having served 5 years with the regiment. Mathew is on a muster roll, dated July 1795 at Quebec City. The regiment boarded the ship “Asia” in September 1800 returning to Europe by way of Halifax.  Mathew was discharged at Halifax as being unfit for service due to “age and infirmity”. He had made his way back to Montreal where he petitioned for land on the 10th of January 1802. His petition was denied. I do not know the name of his wife or daughter or what happened to them. Mathew was given permission to stay at the Invalid Establishment at Fort William Henry on the 13th of February 1813. I do not know if he made it there. No further Records are available as to his death.

Mathews and his wife’s son John stayed in the Niagara Region and was granted land by John Graves Simcoe. He met and married Margaret Brown around 1800, the daughter of James Brown and Mary Marr. They both moved up to the Markham/Pickering Area north of Toronto in the first decade of the 19th century.
