Notes for John Udell - Direct Ancestor
John Udell came with his family to Quebec in 1787 and to Upper Canada in 1790 with the 26th Regiment of Foot.
I estimate that John was 17 years old in 1787 since that is the year he joined the British Army.
John served with the regiment until 1792 when the regiment returned to Quebec, then having served 5 years.
John petitioned for land on 14 August 1795 at Newark (Niagara-on-the-Lake), based on 5 years service with the 26th Regiment. He received the north half of lot 33 in the second concession and lot 33 in the 3rd concession in Beverley Township, Wentworth County from Lieutenant John Graves Simcoe.
John and Margaret’s two eldest children baptised by Rev. Robert Addison at St Mark’s Church in Niagara-on-the-Lake on 21 May 1804, along with 4 of James Brown and Mary Marr’s children.
John Udell is styled “John Udell the hunter” in a bill of sale for a property in the Pickering area.
John was on the town council for Pickering, Ontario in 1817. He puchased the South 1/2 of lots 32 and 33 in the 9th Concession on 22nd of May 1815 from Phillip Cramer.
